Moving doesn’t have to be such a hassle. Whether you are moving into an apartment across town or into a brand new home in another state, we can get you through it like a champ with just a few easy steps!!

First of all, you need to de-clutter!! Most people find it very helpful to get a storage space while in transition. This will give you ample area to sort through your things so you can decide what will be going to your new home with you, what can be sold in a garage sale and what just needs to be thrown away. Some storage facilities have garage sales seasonally and they’ll even do the advertising for you! If you decide you don’t want to mess with the work of putting on a garage sale on top of everything else you have to do to get ready for your move, you can always donate those items to a good cause! Please see below to find great places where your second hand goods could really make a difference. By the way, these places will pick your items up, bring them back to the center for you and give you a receipt so you can write it off on your taxes!

The next step you’ll want to take is to collect your moving supplies: i.e. boxes, tape, sharpies, masking tape, gloves, wrapping paper, etc. Sheesh! It wore me out just thinking about it and it certainly isn’t cheap!! If you’re on a budget, which I think most of us are, you’ll want to save every penny you can so you have plenty of money to decorate once you get into your new place.

Okay, let’s talk boxes! Call about a week ahead of time to some of your local retailers and see when they’ll have boxes in and if they would be nice enough to hold them for you.  A few places to consider are your local grocery or liquor stores and furniture stores. If you don’t have time for scouting these things out just come by High Point Storage and we will provide you with a moving kit! We have the regular: small, medium, large and extra-large boxes but we also have specialty boxes for lamps, wardrobes and pictures or mirrors. We also have plenty of tape, box cutters, bubble wrap, dish kits, glass kits and wrapping paper.

Next, you’ll need to get your transfer on!! You will absolutely need to know the day that you will be moving out and/or moving in. We always hope these two things are on the same day but sometimes they just aren’t, so you will need to be careful when planning your transfers. I like these dates to overlap by about three days to give me more time to clean the place I’m moving out of and clean the place I’m moving into. Also, sometimes these dates do not work out the way you want them to and you do not want to be left without power or water. With most other companies you can change your billing address on the back of your remittance when you send it in with your regular payment or online at their individual websites. This is not sufficient for changing your service address though and I strongly recommend speaking to an actual human being at the company when you do this! I just don’t trust a recording or checking boxes to get something like this done.

Here are a few services you will need to transfer before the big move:

  1. Electricity and Gas
  2. Water and Sewer
  3. Trash and Recycling Pick Up
  4. Cable and Internet
  5. And Home Phones, if you have them.

Time to pack! Call a friend or two for help. You can make a night of it with pizzas, drinks and maybe follow it up with a movie. A few “must haves” include:

  1. Plastic totes /Boxes and newsprint to pack your items
  2. Masking tape and a sharpie to label your boxes
  3. Strong tape to seal your boxes

Plastic totes are great because they are super durable, reusable and stackable and if you get the clear ones you can literally see right through them! Masking tape is great for labeling because it tears so easily and can be removed without completely ruining your box. In a pinch, your local newspaper will do just fine for packing your breakables but be prepared to wash everything very well when you get unpacked because the ink will definitely leave its mark! Save time and money by packing your dishes in your towels and linens instead. For easy access: pack yourself an overnight bag with  shampoo, conditioner, body soap, razor, make up, a roll of toilet paper, your medication, a box opener, a towel, wash cloth , a fresh set of sheets, a change of comfy clothes, phone chargers  and anything else that may be of Uber importance right when you get into your new place. Trust me, you are going to want a shower and fresh sheets after all of that hard work!!

Next, it’s time to get moving! If you rented a storage space at High Point Storage you can simply give us a call and schedule our moving truck for FREE, as long as you keep it under 100 miles . Just a few things to know: you will need to bring in your valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance and a credit card to be held for incidentals. You can pick our 10’ box truck with Tommy Lift up by 9 am and literally use it all day if you need to, then, simply refill the gasoline and bring us the receipt upon return of the truck! It really is that simple! If you are not one of our wonderful customers, do not fret, there is still hope for you yet! You can rent our truck for just $29 a day and .39 cents per mile.

OR call those buddies back and ask if they can help with the big move. It may cost you a little on food and drinks, but it will be cheaper than hiring a mover.

You’re so close…just a few more steps!! So, hopefully everything was moved in and still looks like it did when you packed it up. If so, you are in excellent shape, the hard part is over…well, mostly. Now you need to unpack those boxes, wash dishes, wipe down all of your furniture surfaces and figure out how you want to set up your new place. If it’s late at night when you get everything done though, just relax, the rest of this can wait until the morning.
